Task

“Consider, record and respond to existing ‘infrastructures’ within the ‘linear city’ of Stoke-on-Trent, as it shifts from a traditional urban model based on historic ‘civic’ cores to a fluid ‘post-industrial’ landscape”

During my research I came across stats on how our living on the earth was using up our own supplies for life. We use 120% of the capacity of the planet according to Mathis Wackernagel from Global Footprint along with some other deafening facts about how we our essentially using up our very own resources which allow us to live a normal life. Gilles Gauthier proposed a concept of a linear city to ‘improve the quality of life while minimizing the ecological impact.’
Taking some notes from his work, he believes that the ecological and sociological problems we have could be resolved by the creation of the linear city.

‘This architectural research aimed at finding a solution that would blend the two lifestyles by making cities with a versatile public transportation more efficient than personal cars that are a source of noise and pollution.’

He considers all aspects of the situation and solution in terms of cost saving, pollution and more.

‘it is technologically feasible to reduce considerably the inhabited area, to improve the quality of life and to be ecologically correct. It would also reduce considerably the cost of living.’

From here on he discusses his opinion on how a solution could and would work if it was put into practise. These are just some short notes ,from his work, on how part of his suggestions link to the ‘infrastructures’ within the ‘linear city’.

In relation to mobility I intend to read “Re-shaping the City”, edited by Michael Guggenheim, Ola Söderström, getting some further insight and suggestions as to if it may be possible to use a collective group of the given terms to use in effect on Stoke-on-Trent.
