POTTERIES THINKBELT

As mentioned earlier in the discussion, Cedric Price's Potteries Thinkbelt was an experimental scheme he devised for new higher education venues in and around Stoke-on-Trent. His concept is interesting as it used existing infrastructure such as the railways, and reused them as mobile educational hubs. Price realised that because our societies mobility snowballs very quickly (i.e. Moore's Law), the buildings within which we operate should also be mobile and most importantly, be either temporary or adaptable to cope with our constantly changing needs. This especially applied to Universities. For me what this points out most is how difficult it is for society to keep up with its own progress. Before one plan is complete, society's needs have changed and the plan needs remodelling. Price understood that for our infrastructures to have longevity, they must have adaptability.
